Magnesium Ethanolate (MgE) – Catylen® S series

Evonik has been manufacturing and marketing MgE since 1965 and sells it today under the brand name Catylen^® S 100. Evonik is one of the leading global suppliers of MgE and has built up unsurpassed expertise and an intimate understanding of customer needs in the polyolefin industry.

Catylen^® S 100 (also called magnesium ethanolate, magnesium ethoxide or magnesium ethylate) is used as a support precursor for Ziegler-Natta catalysts; as such it is at the heart of the catalyst and therefore of the polymerisation process. Because the properties of MgE influence the performance of the catalyst and determine the shape of the polymer particles, Evonik’s know-how in Catylen^® S 100 particle engineering offers genuine value to our customers. Thanks to our global technical support, Evonik’s customers always have access to this expertise. To generate the Ziegler-Natta catalyst, Catylen^® S 100 is reacted with an excess of TiCl4 and a Lewis base to form the pre-catalyst. The final polymerisation catalyst is then generated by reacting the pre-catalyst with a co-catalyst and optionally a donor.
