When process feeds need to be freed from impurities, finding the right adsorbent – or combination of adsorbents – is key. Even 99.5% pure, polymer-grade propylene, for example, still requires purification prior to any polymerization or chemical process; but there is no one-size-fits-all purification solution for removing common contaminants such as oxygenates, mercaptans, hydrogen sulphide and carbonyl sulphide.

Olefins such as ethylene and propylene, for example, can be purified with three main adsorbent types: molecular sieves, promoted alumina, and alumina/molecular sieve hybrids. DYNOCEL® 680: HYBRID ADSORBENT FOR POLAR AND ACID-GAS COMPOUNDS

Dynocel® 680 is a spherical hybrid adsorbent for the purification of vapor or liquid phase olefinic hydrocarbon streams. The molecular sieve component removes polar compounds such as water, alcohols, ammonia, ethers, ketones and mercaptans to non-detectible levels; the promoted activated alumina component removes acidic compounds such as H2S, COS, and CO2.

The adsorbent does not require a preload step. This ensures a safer and more reliable operation and eliminates the risk of catastrophic adsorbent failure. Since no olefin is required for the regeneration process, operating costs are significantly lower. Dynocel® 680 exhibits low reactivity, which prevents the formation of by-products. The benefit: no off-spec products due to color, haze or other related problems as well as no equipment fouling.
